Ida-Viru’s record-breaking journey starts from Narva-Jõesuu Harbour

Many people have noticed the yellow concrete signs in the Narva-Jõesuu Harbour and around the city’s riverside and seaside areas. These are not random objects, but mark important tourism and nature records in Ida-Viru County.

In the spring summer of 2020, the University of Tartu mapped Estonia’s natural and man-made records. The survey revealed that the largest number of record sites in Estonia is located in Ida-Viru County – a total of 34 record sites were mapped. The tourism cluster, in cooperation with the municipalities of Ida-Viru, decided to bring some of these records into the physical environment, making them visible and tangible for visitors.

In the framework of the project “Erection of Estonian tourism record sites in Ida-Viru County”, a total of 19 record sites were erected across the county, providing visitors with an overview of the content and meaning of each site.

In Narva-Jõesu, these labels play a special role. It is here, in the Narva-Jõesuu Harbour, that the gateway to the Ida-Viru Sea is located – a symbolic place where the river and the sea meet and the journey to the records and discoveries of Ida-Viru County begins. The sign introducing the second important record of our city, Estonia’s longest resort beach (9.2 km), is located on the seafront near the lighthouse. In addition, four boundary markers have been installed on the county’s borders, highlighting the beginning of Ida-Viru as a special region.

Ida-Viru’s record-breaking landmarks are landmarks set in the countryside, each with its own story. They invite you to stop, look around, take pictures and share moments related to a specific place and record. The Port of Narva-Jõesuu is the starting point of many visitors’ journeys to discover these stories.

The project also produced a records-related adventure game – two separate games for the northern and southern parts of Ida-Viru County. This gives the opportunity to experience the region’s records in an active and playful way, not just as facts and figures.

The Port of Narva-Jõesuu is not just a port, it is the starting point of a journey of records in Ida-Viru.
