Safe on water and in the water - current weather and hazard information
Narva-Jõesuu port is where the sea meets the river. Here, nature is in a constant state of flux – wind direction and strength, sea level and water temperature can change several times during the day. That’s why it’s a good idea to stop for a moment and see what the conditions are like before taking to the water.
Why is this important?
Wind and waves have an impact on the safety of both boaters and beach users. Strong crosswinds can make it difficult to steer a boat, while steep waves pose a risk even for experienced boaters. Swimming is also affected by both water temperature and currents in the estuary.
How to prepare?
-
Check the weather conditions. Wind strength, wave height and precipitation forecast give a good picture of the day ahead.
-
Check the water level. At the mouth of a river, water levels can fluctuate rapidly, making swimming or manoeuvring a boat more difficult.
-
Think security first. A life jacket, soberly assessed swimming skills and preparedness for changing weather conditions will ensure that time spent on the water is enjoyable.
Safety advice on the water
-
Don’t overload the boat. Each boat has its own load capacity, which, if exceeded, makes it unstable.
-
Don’t sit on board or move between boats. This can easily cause a rollover.
-
Don’t jump off the boat into the water or swim alongside it. The boat is not designed for this purpose.
-
Stay away from dams and the river’s shipping lane. It is particularly dangerous to move around there.
-
Do not stop under or in the immediate vicinity of the bridge. This can block traffic and put you and others at risk.
-
Check the bottom of the water before swimming. This way you avoid injuries and unpleasant surprises.
-
Don’t overestimate your abilities. Be realistic about your skills and stamina.
-
If you get into a water vortex. Don’t panic, take a deep breath, dive deeper and swim sharply away from the eddy.
-
Don’t stay in cold water for long. Oil spills can happen faster than you think.
